Case Study: Strategic planning with Board members
Aged care provider Everglow Community Care was ready to review their strategic plan with their Board of Management. The strategic planning session needed to fully engage Board members, drawing out the benefit of their collective knowledge, skills and experience. The process had to support the Board's ownership of the strategic plan, while providing the CEO with clear objectives and priorities going forward.
Working with the CEO, Renée designed an interactive meeting process that was interesting for Board members, providing space for them to contribute their thoughts while building on the valuable work already done for the previous strategic plan. Using post-its and a whiteboard, Board members did some hands-on strategic planning based on a program logic approach. Board members reviewed the overarching vision and developed a series of long- and short-term goals, grouped into strategic focus areas. These goals helped them to narrow down the everyday activities the organisation should focus on, to achieve their goals and vision. Board members were impressed with how much they'd achieved just in one meeting. The CEO found the program logic helpful to show the Board how all of the different elements of the organisation fitted together within a single framework. After the session, Renée provided a detailed outcomes report with the completed program logic, key discussion points, and suggested KPIs that the Board could adopt to measure organisational performance. This was solid guidance for the new strategic plan, and used as a base by a public relations firm later engaged by Everglow. "I highly recommend Renée for strategic plan reviews. Renée's approach and communication skills make her fantastic at getting people to become involved and contribute. The feedback from my Board members was that the way in which Renée undertook the task asked of her matched exactly what we were looking for. Thank you Renée." - Wayne Crase, CEO, Everglow Community Care "I'm surprised how much we got through. We achieved a lot.""I feel like I understand the organisation more fully now than I previously have in my 2 years of being on the Board.""I'm very happy [with this framework]. I'm surprised how much I've learned."- Everglow Board members
