Case Study: Decision-making with diverse Steering Committee stakeholders
The Steering Committee for a regional natural resources plan wanted to make sure that the plan would improve how natural resources were managed. They had to agree on how success of the plan would be measured, even though they were from diverse backgrounds - government, industry, community, research. Success indicators had to be measurable, realistic and have the support of all committee members.
Using short sessions during committee meetings, Renée facilitated a process with committee members to develop a rubric. The rubric captured members' thoughts on what success would look like at various levels, from an 'excellent' level of achievement down to an 'unacceptable' level. The rubric helped the steering committee to:
  • agree on realistic goals.
  • clearly define what they wanted the regional plan to achieve.
  • encourage positive outcomes for the diverse sectors they represented.

The completed rubric provided a solid basis to create performance indicators for the regional plan. There were no concerns from Steering Commitee members, as any issues had already been addressed during the rubric facilitation process.
The Australian Government funding body was impressed with the rubric, calling it an excellent method of obtaining stakeholder input to key planning decisions. "Renée is an incredibly capable facilitator. Renée has the ability to apply appropriate tools to facilitate large groups of disparate stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes. Her professionalism and easy going nature, combined with skills and knowledge, shines through on every occasion." - Donna-marie Audas, Steering Committee member "Renée's facilitation style is warm and inclusive, carefully guiding the group to the questions and answers needing to be uncovered. Her information check points and summaries along the journey kept the process on-track and easily avoided the fatigued minds that might appear around 3pm." - Maree Dibella, Steering Committee member
